Japan honors pair from Hawaii for service

The government of Japan has decorated two Hawaii individuals with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for their distinguished accomplishments in national or public services, and for promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

Esther Masako Tateishi Sato, professor emeritus of the University of Hawaii College of Education, has promoted Japanese-language education overseas since 1966. Sato developed widely used Japanese textbooks, teachers' manuals and other materials, and was instrumental in running a course of summer study tour of Japan.

Glenn Katsuichi Miyataki, former president of the Japan-America Institute of Management Science, contributed to international business management education. Miyataki joined UH in 1976, served as special assistant to President Fujio Matsuda and became associate dean of business administration.

Byrnes Yamashita, Far East division planning director for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific, is a co-winner of the Rik Wiant Distinguished Service and Leadership Award from the Federal Planning Division of the American Planning Association. In his 25-year career, he became a leading innovator in joint and strategic planning, and was recognized for his unique understanding of how shore installations support military operations in the Pacific and Indian oceans.
