Waipahu outslugs Roosevelt in OIA Red playoff opener
Kelcey Viliamu's solo home run to center field sparked a seven-run fifth inning as Waipahu outslugged Roosevelt 15-9 in an Oahu Interscholastic Red first-round playoff game yesterday at Stevenson Middle School.
The Rough Riders jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Lindsay Takekawa and Samantha Murakami both hit two-run singles.
The Marauders' Sina Nu'u slugged a two-run homer to center in the third to tie the game 4-4, and Waipahu's power display continued in the sixth behind Viliamu's shot and two-run doubles by winning pitcher Elsa Apo and Nu'u.
Waipahu advances to play top-ranked Mililani today.

Sina Nu'u of Waipahu stole third base ahead of the throw to Roosevelt's Lindsay Takekawa. Nu'u also hit a two-run homer in the Marauders' 15-9 win yesterday in the OIA Red softball playoffs.

After Tehani Kaaihue and Deja Manubag scored on passed balls in the fourth inning, Kaili Smith walked, stole second, advanced to third on another passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cherece Beyer, as the host Hurricanes cruised past the Mustangs.
Kapolei's Kahana Higa fanned five in four innings for the win.
