Wie withdraws from Safeway

LOS ANGELES » Michelle Wie withdrew from the Safeway International yesterday after tweaking an injury to her left wrist during practice last week.

"I am extremely disappointed to miss the 2008 Safeway International," Wie said. "I'm so grateful to Tom Maletis and the entire tournament staff for offering me this great opportunity, and hope to be back again next year."

The 18-year-old Wie received a sponsor exemption to play in the event next week at Superstition Mountain in Arizona. She has played one tournament this year, finishing 20 strokes behind winner Paula Creamer in the Fields Open in Hawaii late last month.

Saint Mary's topples UH in softball

Sadie Delpit hit a two-run homer in the ninth, lifting Saint Mary's over No. 17 Hawaii, 4-2, on the third day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Megan Galloway fired five scoreless innings of relief for the Gaels.

Kate Robinson belted a two-run homer to give UH a 2-0 lead.

In earlier tournament games yesterday, Northwestern beat Cal 8-0 and Colorado State beat Northwestern 9-3.

Speed camp features egg hunt

The Hawaii Speed & Quickness Clinic will hold its last sessions this weekend before the start of UH spring football practice.

The clinics are 8:30 to 10 a.m. today and tomorrow at UH, with registration at 8.

Tomorrow's clinic features an Easter egg hunt. The fee is $10. Call 739-5444 for more information.

UH men 10th in golf tournament

Hawaii's Kyle Walters shot a 3-under-par 69 and was tied for ninth after the first day of the Ron Moore Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club in Arizona.

UH was 10th in the team standings with a first-round total of 288. Robert Berton shot a 71 to tie for 23rd. Travis Toyama and Kamden Brakel both shot 74 to tie for 50th. San Diego leads the field at 277.

Oshiro victorious in ShoXC debut

Pearl City's Mark Oshiro opened the televised portion of last night's ShoXC event on Showtime with a devastating first-round knockout of Chris Cariaso.

Oshiro, the reigning Icon Sport 135-pound state champion, improved to 10-1 after dropping Cariaso with a right hook midway through the first round.

It's the sixth win a row for Oshiro, who hasn't lost since his epic fight with Ed Newalu that he wound up losing by unanimous decision.

Also on the card, Maui's Analu Brash lost to Shane Del Rosario by TKO in the first round. Del Rosario quickly got Brash on the canvas and repeatedly hit Brash with a series of strikes to force the referee to step in and stop the fight.

HPU softball team improves to 19-0

Hawaii Pacific kept its unbeaten softball record intact with a doubleheader sweep of Dixie State yesterday at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah.

Courtney Kessell twirled a four-hit shutout in the first game, which HPU won 1-0.

Amuhea Young hit a three-run homer in the second game, a 6-3 win.

HPU tops Hawaii-Hilo in tennis

Hawaii Pacific beat Hawaii-Hilo in men's and women's tennis yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Seasider men won 8-1 and the 22nd-ranked HPU women beat 17th-ranked UH-Hilo 6-3.

Hendrik Bode won men's No. 1 singles and partnered with Jan Hroch to capture No. 3 doubles.

Eve Castaing took first singles for the HPU women, and teamed with Christie Pagatpatan to take first doubles.

Chaminade sweeps softball twinbill

Anina Quaranto had four hits as Chaminade swept a doubleheader from Wisconsin-Stout yesterday at Oahu Regional Park 3-1 and 8-3.

The Silverswords improved to 8-15 as Ashley Hopfe and Chelsi Walls got the pitching wins.
