Kono fails to qualify for SBS
LPGA rookie Cindy Pasechnik and veteran Allison Hanna-Williams earned the last two spots in this weekend's SBS Open at Turtle Bay Resort.
Pasechnik and Hanna-Williams shot 69s in a qualifying round yesterday on Turtle Bay's Palmer Course. Their low scores prevented local golfer Stephanie Kono from teeing it up in the LPGA event. Kono tied for third at 71 with Sung Ah Kim, two strokes away from qualifying.
Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu also fell short in qualifying, shooting a 75.
The SBS Open begins Thursday and runs through Sunday. Paula Creamer is the defending champion.
UH holds on to volleyball ranking
Hawaii remains ranked in the CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 men's volleyball poll ... barely. The Warriors are at No. 15 for the second week in a row.
But the rankings don't matter to Hawaii (3-6, 2-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation). The Warriors are more concerned about breaking their two-game losing streak this week against No. 5 UCLA (9-4, 6-3). UH and UCLA meet in 7 p.m. contests Thursday and Friday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
"It matters that it's UCLA but, more importantly, we need a win," Warrior senior co-captain Jake Schkud said yesterday.
The three undefeated teams remained 1-2-3 in the poll, led by BYU (9-0). Penn State (12-0) is No. 2, followed by Long Beach State (9-0). The Cougars had eight first-place votes while the Nittany Lions and 49ers had four votes each.

UHH's Kimitete and Kolaric honored
Hawaii-Hilo guard Nesha Kimitete was named the conference's women's basketball player of the week for Feb. 4-10. Kimitete led the Vulcans to a 2-0 mark during the week, averaging 18.5 points per game and hitting 70 percent from the field.
Marko Kolaric received his second straight PacWest men's basketball player of the week nod yesterday. Kolaric averaged a double-double, leading Chaminade to a 2-1 record. During the week, Kolaric led the conference in rebounding, averaging 10.7 boards per game and 18.3 points per game.
Seasiders swept in doubleheader
Brigham Young-Hawaii dropped a softball doubleheader against Cal State-Dominguez Hills yesterday in Carson, Calif.
Kahealani Betham homered in the top of the seventh inning to spark a four-run BYUH rally, but the Seasiders lost the opener 7-4. CSDH's Kaci Carroll then tossed a one-hitter in an 8-0 win in the second game.
