UH enrollment hits 10-year high
There are 48,346 students enrolled at the University of Hawaii's 10 campuses, the highest spring enrollment in more than a decade, the university said in a news release.
The total enrollment is an increase of nearly 2,000 students over last spring or 4.2 percent.
All campuses except for UH Manoa saw increases in enrollment over last spring. UH Manoa had a decrease of 171 students or .7 percent to 18,818.
UH West Oahu, which recruited its first freshman class, experienced the largest percentage increase of all campuses with an 18.3 percent increase, or 150 more students, for a total of 970; while UH Hilo enrollment increased to 3,445, a gain of 158 students or 4.8 percent.
About 25,013 student are attending the university's seven community colleges, an increase of 1,771 students or 7.6 percent above last spring. Kapiolani Community College saw more students enroll than all UH campuses with 540 more students, or 7.8 percent for a total enrollment of 7,451. Hawaii Community College saw the largest percentage increase of the community colleges at 15.9 percent, up 338 students for a total enrollment of 2,468.
Honolulu Community College enrollment is 3,870, up 67 students or 1.8 percent compared to last spring; Kauai Community College has 957 students enrolled, 4 more than last spring or 0.4 percent; Leeward Community College registered 5,738 students, an increase of 429 or 8.1 percent; Maui Community College has 2,852 students enrolled, 255 more than last spring, up 9.8 percent; and Windward Community College enrollment is 1,677, 138 more students than last spring, a 9 percent increase.
Murder suspect will not get bail
Alapeti Tunoa Jr. has agreed to forego bail pending his trial for allegedly bludgeoning his ex-girlfriend to death on a Kailua street.
Tunoa, 30, has been in custody since his Jan. 16 arrest. His bail was $1 million.
Yesterday, Deputy Prosecutor Rom Trader asked Circuit Judge Randal Lee to revoke bail for Tunoa because he poses a flight risk and a danger to community.
Trader said there are no conditions or combination of conditions to reasonably assure Tunoa's appearance at trial or the safety of people in the community.
Tunoa agreed.
He is facing charges of second-degree murder, assault, property damage, terroristic threatening and firearm possession. Police said Tunoa rammed a sport-utility vehicle into ex-girlfriend Janel Tupuola's car Jan. 16, pulled her out of the vehicle, bludgeoned her with a shotgun and beat a bystander who tried to intervene.
His trial date is March 31.
Honolulu man dies skiing in Utah
A 59-year-old Hawaii resident died Sunday at a Utah ski resort.
About 3:25 p.m. Sunday in Park City, Utah, Dr. Alan S.T. Chang, of Honolulu, was found at the bottom of the Sitka run at the Park City Mountain Resort.
Park City police Capt. Phil Kirk said a family member found him unresponsive, and paramedics attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. Kirk said investigators are awaiting on Chang's autopsy to move forward with the investigation.
Storms curtail camping permits
LIHUE » Due to recent heavy rains and the threat of more rain on Kauai, the Department of Land and Natural Resources has temporarily suspended issuing camping permits for the Kalalau Trail and the Kalalau Valley camping area.
No camping permits will be issued until February 8 at the earliest, DLNR officials said.

Catholic Charities gets big grant
The Atherton Family Foundation has awarded a $500,000 grant to Catholic Charities Hawaii to go toward construction of a permanent facility.
The site, located at 1822 Keeaumoku St. in Makiki, will provide more opportunities for the organization to expand its services throughout the state.
"We greatly appreciate Atherton's generous support to help us achieve this major milestone of consolidating and integrating our programs into one location on Oahu," said Jerry Rauckhorst, Catholic Charities Hawaii president and chief executive officer, in a news release.

Husband accused of multiple abuses
Police arrested a 23-year-old man accused of abusing his wife last month.
The alleged abuse occurred on Jan. 25, 26 and 31, the 20-year-old wife reported. Yesterday the suspect allegedly choked the woman in their Kaneohe home, police said.
Police arrested the suspect at the home on suspicion of three counts of household abuse.

Robbery suspect flees without cash
Police were looking for a suspect who fled yesterday evening empty-handed from the scene of an attempted bank robbery at Pearlridge Center.
Police said a man entered the American Savings Bank, located at 98-200 Kamehameha Highway, about 5 p.m. and handed a teller a demand note.
Police said the bank manager noticed something suspicious and approached the man. The suspect fled without cash.
The man was wearing a hooded jacket, police said.
Last night, police were awaiting surveillance videos for a better description of the suspect.

Man arrested for punching 2 at bar
Police arrested a 47-year-old man early yesterday who allegedly punched a bar owner and a customer who tried to help.
About 3:30 yesterday morning, the owner of a Keeaumoku Street bar refused service to the suspect because he was already highly intoxicated, police said. The suspect got angry and allegedly punched the owner, a 56-year-old woman.
Police said a 47-year-old patron intervened, but the suspect punched him, breaking his nose. Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second- and third-degree assault.

Cash stolen out of victim's hands
Police arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly snatching another man's cash in Waikiki early Monday.
About 2:15 a.m., police said, a 36-year-old man was counting his money at Kuhio and Kaiulani avenues when the suspect allegedly took the cash from his hands.
The victim chased the suspect, who ran Koko Head-bound on Kuhio Avenue, and detained him in front of 2465 Kuhio Ave. The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree theft.
