Trade locks for love

Da SmarTitas and Daspace Hawaii will celebrate Valentine's Day by supporting tomorrow's First Friday Locks of Love benefit.

Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides children who have experienced total hair loss due to medical conditions with high-quality, custom fitted hairpieces made of donated human hair.

Daspace and Yes Hair Salon will be accepting donations of hair 10 inches or longer, as well as monetary donations, from 5 to 9 p.m. Hair will be cut on site and basic styling included at no cost. Bleached hair cannot be used, but dyed or permed hair is acceptable.

Donors will receive a certificate with before and after pictures, and all monetary contributions are tax deductible.

The event is free and will feature refreshments, entertainment and gallery exhibits.

New year brings new 'Legacy'

Duke's Waikiki offers its annual limited-edition 2008 "Legacy of Aloha" T-shirt at the restaurant at 2335 Kalakaua Ave. Sales of the new design will benefit nonprofit organizations.

Duke's Waikiki will celebrate its anniversary by donating $10 from the sale of each $21 T-shirt to organizations that include water-sport-related or canoeing organizations, ocean and water environmentalist groups, youth and senior organizations, and cultural organizations within Hawaii's community. Organizations may apply to be considered as beneficiaries of the Legacy of Aloha program.

'Get Surf?' launch party scheduled

"Da Pidgin Guerilla" Lee Tonouchi was surprised to learn that most of his English students at Kapiolani Community College thought surfing originated in California.

No way, Jose! To set them straight, he helped coordinate a surf-themed issue of the college's student literary magazine.

A launch party for Get Surf? will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Native Books in Ward Warehouse.

In the issue, Hawaiian Studies instructor Pohaku Stone writes on surfing and the Hawaiian culture, Drew Irons "talks about if wuz hod for be one Haole surfer while growing up on Kaua'i," the Deep Roots clothing company gets a surf-inspired fashion spread and there are student entries in art, poetry and prose about riding the ocean blue.

Step into workshop on Asian dance

Egyptian folk dancer Tito Seif will hold workshops in Asian choreography this weekend.

A session on "melaya," an Egyptian folk dance, takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Aloha Activity Center dance studio, 725 Kapiolani Blvd. On Sunday, Self will teach at Bishop Museum from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost of each workshop is $95 in advance, $100 at the door.

A performance will follow from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the museum. Tickets are $30, $35 at the door.

Palolo garage sale at Chinese Home

Palolo Chinese Home is holding a garage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, featuring kitchenware, clothes, housewares and "hidden treasures."

Classic car cruise booked at Kapolei

Gather the family for a trip to Kapolei for "Classic Car Cruise Night" Saturday.

Ghost Ryder Charlie Garret and Kathleen Larson will take you back to the 1950s with their music while vendors will provide ono grinds to munch on. There also will be games, $10 haircuts from Kapolei Hairstyling Salon and door prizes. Bring canned items for the Cub Scouts food drive to receive tickets for the door prizes.

Hawaii Independent Cruise Nights will display several antique and muscle cars and trucks from the 1900 to present.

The fun runs from 6 to 10 p.m. at StorSecure Self-Storage, behind Burger King.
