$10,000 grant to help mentally disabled

ORI (Opportunities for the Retarded Inc.) received $10,000 from the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation for education, training, employment and housing opportunities for the developmentally disabled.

ORI is a nonprofit organization that has been serving the poor and needy for 27 years.

General Growth Properties' Festival of Giving fundraisers raised more than $100,000 for local charities in the state. GGP properties include Ward Centers and Windward Mall on Oahu, Queen Kaahumanu Center on Maui and the Prince Kuhio Plaza on the Big Island.

Among the 114 nonprofit groups benefiting from the fundraisers were St. Anthony's High School Project Graduation and Kaikua'ana Ne Kaikuahine Pupu Kahi I Holomua Hula Halau on Maui; the Hilo Intermediate School Builders Club and Operation Christmas on the Big Island; and Palama Settlement, Aloha United Way, Prevent Child Abuse Hawaii, Windward Seniors Day Care Center and Hawaii Family Law Clinic on Oahu.

The Alexander & Baldwin Foundation donated $30,000 to Catholic Charities Hawaii to help build a permanent facility on Keeaumoku Street that would enable the expansion of services throughout the state. The nonprofit helps more than 40,000 people annually.
