Penn State wins volleyball title
SACRAMENTO, Calif. » In the end, rank trumped seeding.
Penn State, ranked No. 1 but seeded third coming into the NCAA volleyball tournament, surprised top-seeded Stanford last night to win its second national title.
The Nittany Lions got 26 kills from Megan Hodge and 19 from Nicole Fawcett in a 30-25, 30-26, 23-30, 19-30, 15-8 victory after 2 hours and 12 minutes at the ARCO Arena. The win came exactly three months to the day after Penn State (34-2) lost in five to the Cardinal (32-3) ... the last defeat for the Nittany Lions before going on a 26-match winning streak.
Penn State swept Stanford in 1999 for its first championship at the Stan Sheriff Center. Yesterday, the Lions needed five games, the first five-game championship match since rally scoring was instituted in 2001.
Down 4-3 in Game 5, Penn State scored six straight points for an insurmountable 10-4 lead. It was the second straight year that the Cardinal lost in the final, last season falling to Nebraska.
The championship match drew 13,631 for a two-day total of 26,679, the second-highest attendance mark in NCAA volleyball history behind Omaha, Neb., last year (34,060).
Hawaii baseball camp a week away
The first set of Hawaii baseball camps begins December 21 and runs through the weekend.
The program is offering two camps at Les Murakami Stadium, one for pitchers and one for hitters, directed by Hawaii head coach Mike Trapasso and his staff.
The camps are for players from 7-18 years old and run every day from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Donovan to be at QB Club
Sheraton Hawaii Bowl executive director Jim Donovan will be the featured speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Joining Donovan will be Hawaii men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton and assistant soccer coach Derick Kato. Hawaii soccer player Tehane Higa will also be on hand to pick up her award as November's sportsperson of the month.
The meeting begins at noon at the Pagoda Hotel's main ballroom with lunch being served at 11:30 a.m.
Wahine volleyball banquet next month
Reservations are being taken for the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team banquet, scheduled for Jan. 27, at the Hale Koa Hotel.
No-host cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $50 for the public and $45 for booster club members.

Peterson hits from long range for BYUH
Paul Peterson hit eight 3-pointers en route to 32 points and Lucas Alves added a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 103-75 nonconference basketball victory over Tampa last night at the Cannon Activities Center.
Jermaine Odjegba added 18 points and Trenson Akana 11 for the Seasiders (4-0).
Jeremy Black led Tampa (4-2) with 21 points.
Sea Warriors remain winless
Ashley Jenkins scored 16 points and Karras Blate 12 but they got little support as Hawaii Pacific fell to North Dakota 92-44 in a nonconference women's basketball game at McKinley High.
The Sea Warriors fell to 0-4. Ashley Langen scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Fighting Sioux (11-0).
