CaneFires finally beat Honu
West Oahu snapped a four-game losing streak by beating North Shore 8-5 yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Field.
The win was the CaneFires' first in 10 tries against the West Division rival Honu.
Anthony Hatch, Russell Mitchell and Ryan Rogowski all homered for West Oahu, and starter Blake Wood struck out seven through four innings for the victory.
Chris Valaika had a two-run homer for North Shore, which has already wrapped up the division.
» Waikiki hit five home runs and downed Honolulu 6-1 last night.
Michael Wilson had two solo shots for the BeachBoys to increase his league-leading RBI total to 29.
Kyohei Muranaka struck out 11 in six innings for the win. He improved to 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA.
Fujikawa gets Sony invitation
Tadd Fujikawa, 16, will play in the 2008 Sony Open in Hawaii on a sponsor's exemption.
The Moanalua junior will attempt a repeat effort of his stellar 2007 showing at Waialae Country Club, in which he became the youngest person in 50 years to make a cut at a PGA event.
"He deserves it. He's a keiki o ka aina," said Tony Guerrero Jr., president of Friends of Hawaii Charities, which granted Fujikawa the exemption yesterday. "The whole community loves him."
The Sony Open is Jan. 7-13 at Waialae Country Club.
Fujikawa finished tied for 20th in January and turned pro last August. The 2007 Sony was the first and only time he's made a cut at a PGA event.
Mestan falls in Futures quarterfinal
Hawaii Pacific tennis player Mark Mestan lost his quarterfinal match to No. 1 seed Nicholas Monroe and was eliminated from the USTA Futures Tournament at Waikoloa.
It was Mestan's fourth match in five days.
Noons to fight for EliteXC world title
Kona's KJ Noons will fight for the 160-pound EliteXC vacant mixed-martial arts world title against Nick Diaz tomorrow in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The 5 p.m. (Hawaii time) bout will be aired on Showtime.
Haar, Butin, Noguera make all-region
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Jill Haar and Hawaii-Hilo's Vanessa Butin were picked to the Daktronics Women's Soccer All-Far West Region second team announced yesterday.
The Seasiders' Brian Noguera made the men's second team.
HPU players earn academic honors
Hawaii Pacific softball players Clerisse Lemke, Danny Young and Casey Taylor were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete Team, the school announced.
Players must have a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average to qualify.
