Colt is on course for NCAA TD mark

If Colt Brennan continues on course, the NCAA record for career touchdown passes will soon be his, having covered substantial ground in his pursuit with three productive performances against New Mexico State.

Brennan's six touchdown passes in last night's 50-13 win over New Mexico State gave him the UH career mark for touchdown passes and moved him into second place on the all-time NCAA list with 119.

Last night's total also gave Brennan 18 touchdowns in three meetings with New Mexico State and marked the fourth time in his career he's thrown as least six in a game.

His career-best seven scores came against the Aggies in 2005 and he posted five in last year's meeting.

"I think this year we had a great scheme and the receivers made big plays," Brennan said. "I think it is more of a receiver day than a quarterback day."

Brennan passed three more prolific passers -- including his predecessor as Hawaii quarterback -- on the career touchdown list last night and now stands within two of the NCAA record of 121 held by BYU's Ty Detmer.

Brennan entered the game with 113 career touchdowns, and passed Florida's Danny Wuerffel (114) and Louisiana Tech's Tim Rattay (115) on the all-time list with three first-half scores.

He then tied former UH quarterback Tim Chang for the school record and second place on the NCAA list with his 117th TD, floating a 23-yarder to Davone Bess early in the third quarter.

Brennan then made the UH record his own with an 11-yard connection to Ryan Grice-Mullins at the 3:52 mark of the period.

Brennan tossed an NCAA single-season record 58 touchdowns last season and pushed his total this season to 26.

"What I learned last year is as long as I don't pay attention to them, chances are I might beat them," Brennan said of the records. "As long as I don't think about it I should be all right. ... Unless you guys keep bringing it up."

Da Bess

Slotback Davone Bess scored two touchdowns, giving him 38 for his career and tying Chad Owens and Michael Carter for the school career record.

Bess scored on TD passes of 23 and 12 yards, catching seven passes for 112 yards.

"I thank my quarterback and offensive line," Bess said. "When it comes down to it it's a team game. I want to thank my teammates who put me in position to make plays.

Rivers extends streak

Hawaii wideout Jason Rivers extended the nation's longest active streak for consecutive games with a reception on his 16-yard touchdown catch early in the first quarter.

Rivers has caught a pass in 44 straight games. He is seven shy of the NCAA record of 51 held by Texas Tech's Taurean Henderson (2002-05). He will finish two short of the record if he catches a ball in Hawaii's final five games, which includes a bowl game.

Banged up

Three UH safeties suffered injuries last night. Keao Monteilh's is probably the most serious.

Monteilh injured a left shoulder trying to tackle NMSU receiver Wes Neiman at the goal line when Neiman scored the Aggies' lone touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Chase Holbrook.

Monteilh was to undergo tests today to determine the extent of the injury.

"He's probably our most improved player," defensive coordinator Greg McMackin said.

Desmond Thomas has a bruised quad, but should be OK to practice next week.

Jake Patek said he suffered a stinger, but added "I'm healed."

Another for Allen

New Mexico State senior wide receiver Brandon Allen kept his streak alive.

When Allen caught a 5-yard pass from Aggies quarterback Chase Holbrook late in the first quarter, it marked the 40th game in a row he's had a reception -- the second longest streak in the nation.

Allen is one away from Duane Gregory's NMSU school record of 41 in a row, from 1994 to '97.

Allen finished with six catches for 40 yards.

Hawaii connections

The Aggies brought six players from Hawaii: starting noseguard Ray Manumaleuna, defensive linemen Oren Long and Ana Tuiasosopo, linebackers La'uli Fonoti and Ka'au Adolpho, and fullback Dylan Moss.

In their high school days, Moss, Long and Tuiasosopo played for Saint Louis, and Manumaleuna, Fonoti and Adolpho played for Kahuku.

Short yardage

Dan Kelly missed two PAT attempts last night. He entered the game having made all 50 of his PATs this season. ... Hawaii won the coin toss and received the opening kickoff for only the second time this season.
