McLachlin shoots 4 over par
Parker McLachlin is running out of tournaments.
Entering this week's PGA Tour stop in Scottsdale, Ariz., the former UCLA and Punahou School golfer is ranked No. 139 on the money list. He needs to finish in the top 125 in order to keep his PGA Tour card. If he doesn't, then it's back to tour school in December.
He opened with a 4-over 74 in yesterday's first round of the Fry's Electronics Open. McLachlin is tied for 124th out of 132 golfers and will have to go low today to stick around for the weekend. After this week, there are two more regular-season events left on tour.
Dean Wilson is also playing this week. The Castle High graduate opened with an even-par 70. He trails leader Michael Allen by seven strokes. He will retain his tour card no matter what happens the rest of the year.
Hawaii's Bihag advances in singles
Hawaii's Chloe Bihag advanced to the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Regional Championships yesterday in San Diego.
Bihag defeated Loyola Marymount's Audrey Bulkey 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Three UH singles players lost in the round of 128 yesterday. UNLV's Nikol Dimitrova beat Sophie Kobuch 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, San Diego State's Milana Yusupov topped Julia Sandborn 6-3, 6-1, and the Aztecs' Julia Trunk blanked Marie Tanaka 6-0, 6-0.
Also, one Rainbow Wahine doubles team lost yesterday. San Diego State's Sisse Nielsen and Kathryn Kitts dropped Sandborn and Tanaka 8-3.
Ching takes lead at OCC tournament
Alex Ching shot a 7-under 64 to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the 54-hole Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational golf tournament yesterday.
Lorens Chan and Doug Williams are tied for second at 5-under 66, followed by Brandan Kop at 68.
The tournament continues today and finishes up tomorrow.
Gullikson coming for doubles clinic
Former U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gullikson will be giving a doubles tennis clinic entitled, "My Coach, Tom Gullikson" next Tuesday at the Oahu Club in Hawaii Kai.
Gullikson will give a doubles demo from 8:30 to 9 a.m., followed by three 30-minute rotations of on-court doubles with Gullikson.
Gullikson reached No. 38 in singles and No. 9 in doubles in his career. He has also coached top players such as Pete Sampras, Jennifer Capriati and Todd White.
According to organizers, the public is invited to observe the clinic, but participation is limited to Oahu Club members.
