Roosevelt grad Ogoshi makes impact at Hofstra

Shellane Ogoshi hopes her climb to the top of the school record books will make people back home take notice of her current home.

"Nobody knows what or who Hofstra is," Ogoshi said of the school located in Long Island, N.Y. "I just want to make people aware of who we are."

The '04 Roosevelt graduate has been an integral part of Hofstra's success during her four years.

The Pride advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season for the first time.

Hofstra is 11-8 this season and ended a five-year losing streak to Fairfield Wednesday night with a four-game victory over the Stags.

Ogoshi had 61 assists, 24 digs and six kills in the match. She is now fourth on the school's career list in digs with 1,484. She also became the second Pride player ever to surpass 4,000 assists in her career.

The match had extra meaning for Ogoshi as she went up against four players from Hawaii on the Stags.

Three of them, Ashley Hanohano, Lindsey Lee and Jazmin Pa'akaula, were classmates at St. Joseph ('04).

Brandi Higa (Hawaii Baptist '05) also contributed six digs for the Stags.

Ashley Aratani (Iolani '04) added nine digs over the weekend for Washington (16-0) which faces four top 10 teams in its next four games.

» Senior Lecca Roberts (Seabury Hall '04) is second in blocks (0.96 bpg) and third in kills (2.98 kpg) as the starting middle blocker at Pepperdine.

» South Dakota State freshman setter Melia Iwamoto (Kalani '07) had 30 assists in a three-game loss to Missouri State. Iwamoto is just 66 assists shy of moving into ninth place in school history.

» San Jose State sophomore Kristal Tsukano (Kamehameha '06) had nine digs and three aces in a five-game loss to No. 22 New Mexico State.

» Freshman Kapua Kamana'o (Iolani '07) recorded 27 assists and eight digs for St. Mary's (Calif.) in a five-game loss to 14th-ranked San Diego.

Sophomore middle blocker Megan Burton (Iolani '06) added six blocks and six kills for the Gaels. Burton leads the team in hitting percentage (.35) and is tops in the conference in blocks per game (1.57).

Football

» Colorado senior linebacker Jordon DIzon (Waimea '04) had 14 tackles and recorded his first career interception in a 20-point victory over Baylor. Dizon leads the nation in tackles per game (13.0) and total tackles (78).

» Idaho freshman Joseph Dickson (Baldwin '07) blocked a punt that was recovered for a touchdown and finished with a career-high 11 tackles in a 28-20 loss to San Jose State.

» Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada (Kapolei '04) threw for 166 yards and rushed for 122 yards to help the Midshipmen defeat Pittsburgh in two overtimes Wednesday night in a game broadcast on ESPN. Kaheaku-Enhada threw two touchdowns passes, including a 25-yarder that tied the score in the first overtime.

» USC linebacker Kaluka Maiava (Baldwin '05) had five tackles in the Trojans' one-point upset loss to Stanford.

Men's Soccer

» Gonzaga goalkeeper Vito Higgins (Academy of the Pacific '03) was named the WCC co-player of the week after recording back-to-back shutouts over the weekend.

Higgins totaled eight saves in matches against St. Mary's and San Francisco.

Women's Soccer

» LMU sophomore Katrina Chong (Hilo '06) has scored one goal with one assist in eight games as a reserve forward.

Freshman Nickey Ha (Iolani '07) has played in 11 matches, starting 10, as a midfielder. She has taken three shots but hasn't scored.

» Junior defender Kelsey Baker (Punahou '05) assisted on Pepperdine's only goal in a 1-1 tie against Hawaii.

» Senior goalkeeper Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04) had seven saves for Duke in a 1-1 tie against No. 6 Boston College.

Tennis

» UC-Irvine senior Jessica Broadfoot (Punahou '04) and junior Heidi Kaloi (Kamehameha '05) returned home for the UH Rainbow Wahine Invitational tennis tournament that runs through tomorrow at the UH Tennis Complex.

Broadfoot and Kaloi helped the Anteaters reach the NCAA tournament last season.
