Jewelry heist suspect is charged
An armed man accused of robbing an Ala Moana jewelry store of two watches made an initial appearance yesterday in Honolulu District Court.
Aaron Charles McGuire, 42, was charged over the weekend with first-degree robbery in the Sept. 15 holdup at Hallmark Jewelry in Ala Moana Center.
At about 7 p.m. that day, a male asked a salesclerk for a closer look at two Omega watches on display. The male tried on the two watches, valued in excess of $20,000, and while doing so, displayed the butt of a handgun concealed within his waistband. He allegedly told the salesclerk, "I have a gun. Don't follow me."
The male fled on foot without paying for the watches, then jumped on a black mo-ped to make his escape.
A police sergeant who reviewed images from security cameras recognized the robber as someone he had arrested and charged in a previous robbery at Macy's. In that case the male suspect forcibly made off with five Tommy Bahama shirts.
A tip to CrimeStoppers also identified the suspect in the video surveillance as McGuire. Several other witnesses also identified McGuire as the male robbing the Hallmark store.
Police staked out McGuire's Birch Street apartment Wednesday and arrested him. His wife, who allegedly tried to warn him, was also arrested for hindering prosecution.
Free event promotes fishing
The Second Annual Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival is set for Sunday at the Honolulu Fishing Village, Pier 38.
The free event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is put on by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group and includes live fishing demonstrations, seafood preparation and tours of fishing vessels and the commercial fish auction.
The first 250 children attending will receive a free bamboo pole. Keiki can also ice fish, learn gyotaku, play games and win prizes.
Proceeds from a silent auction will benefit Pacific Islands Fisheries Group, which describes itself as a nonprofit networking organization of fishers.
Free parking and shuttle to the festival from Honolulu Community College begins at 8:30 a.m. There will be limited free valet parking at Pier 38. For more information, contact Kelvin Ching at 371-6853.
Kauai park improvements start
Work on a new restroom and related improvements at Haena State Park on Kauai's North Shore began yesterday, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced.
Improvements will include accessibility features, an outdoor shower tree, new pathways and related upgrades.
The park will remain open during construction, and portable toilets will be provided. However, there will not be a shower or any changing facilities, and Kee beach will only be accessible from the road.
Colin & Dillon Construction is contractor for the $432,000 job, which is expected to be completed by June.
The improvements are part of the DLNR's ongoing multiyear park improvement plan, the first major upgrade to state parks in 40 years.

Man is arrested in alleged stabbing
Police arrested a 57-year-old man who allegedly stabbed another man Sunday in downtown Honolulu.
Police said the suspect used a sharp object to stab the victim, 58. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said. Police arrested the suspect, who has no local address, on Bethel Street for investigation of second-degree attempted murder. Further details were not available.

3 in hospital after 2-vehicle collision
A two-vehicle, head-on collision in Ewa Beach yesterday afternoon critically injured a female driver and injured the other driver and his passenger.
Police said a 36-year-old woman was driving north on Old Fort Weaver Road at the 91-2240 block at about 2:50 p.m. and crossed the center line, overtaking a vehicle.
The car crashed into a southbound pickup truck driven by a 30-year-old man. The man and his 24-year-old female passenger were taken to the Queen's Medical Center and were reported in stable condition. The driver of the car also went to Queen's, in critical condition.
Police said speed was a factor in the crash.
Suspects sought in attack and arson
Police are looking for a group of men who allegedly beat two men and set a truck on fire early Sunday at a Waianae beach.
At about 5 a.m. the group of men allegedly attacked two 21-year-old men before fleeing. The truck belonged to the 64-year-old grandfather of one of the victims, police said. The extent of the victims' injuries and descriptions of the suspects were not available.

Victim spots 2 alleged attackers
Police arrested two of three men wanted for allegedly beating up a Waikiki man at the beach last month, hospitalizing him with several fractured ribs and a punctured lung.
At about 1:20 a.m. Sept. 17, three acquaintances of the victim, including a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, allegedly attacked him and stole his wallet, police said. The victim, 36, was taken to the hospital with multiple fractured ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung and a cracked sternum, police said.
At 4 p.m. Sunday the victim was walking in Waikiki when he spotted two of his attackers, police said. He called police who arrested the suspects on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
