UH QB coach calls Brennan and rest of offense’s output ‘crazy’
DON'T misunderstand him. Dan Morrison likes what's going on out there. He really does. He's in favor of it. He loves what's happening out on that field. He is Hawaii's quarterbacks coach. This is very, very good news for him.
It's just that he knows it's all so ...
"It's absolutely bizarre," Morrison said at the Honolulu Quarterback Club yesterday.
"Crazy," he said of what's going on.
It defies the laws of nature.
It goes against science.
It's impossible!
(Is it? Or is it so possible your head is spinning like a top?)
It's not supposed to happen this way. And it may never happen again.
"To be averaging 55 points a game, that's ridiculous," Morrison said.
He said, "We're doing some things different (scheme-wise), but nothing dramatically different than we've been doing the last eight years." On behalf of the coaches, he said, "It's not us."
Well, then what is responsible for this seismic shift? El Nino? Global warming? A grave disturbance in the force?
"It's just the young people we have in the system right now," Morrison said.
Ah, young people. That would have been my next guess.
So no, Morrison said. What's going on with Hawaii's offense right now, this isn't normal.
The rumblings in the stadium Saturday night? That came from people who now expect the impossible.
"Colt now routinely puts up 80, 81 percent completions, which is ... crazy," Morrison said. He'd had to slow down in the middle of his sentence, reaching to find the right word. "That really shouldn't be happening. And it's tough to keep in mind -- that there's a certain expectation that that's always going to happen. And the reality is it's not going to happen. (Colt Brennan's) unique in that way."
So what is he saying? It's like a 100-year flood? A 20-year storm? El Nino?
Said Morrison, "You really shouldn't be putting up that many points."
And that's the difference, now. The accuracy. The efficiency. Mostly, the points. Hawaii was always up there in the passing yards. Tim Chang has the all-time record for yards, but this is different. "But the scoring has changed," Morrison said. That's been the difference, these past two years.
Yes, there's this run-and-shoot offense. But, "they operate it like I've never seen it operated before," Morrison said. Remember the roll Rolo was on in 2001?
This one just seems like it's ongoing, no big deal.
It shouldn't be happening like this. It may never happen again. This isn't normal.
"Bizarre."
"Crazy."
"Ridiculous."
And that's coming from the quarterbacks coach.
He knows this is like a scientific phenomenon, like fish or whales or animals suddenly inexplicably showing up in great number, or far out of their natural range. (Which kind of sounds like how Brennan ended up here.) It's just weird, and it's wonderful, and it might never happen again.
"Get to the stadium while you can," Morrison said. "Because they're going to be gone really shortly." He's talking about the young people. They're on quite a roll. And once they're gone ...
Until then, savor this for what it is.
"But somewhere along the line here we're going to hit a bump in the road. We're going to play somebody that's playing us real well and our kids are not going to be playing quite as well," Morrison said. "And the crazy thing is we're going to come out of the game and win it 28-14 and people are going to be all over us over, 'What happened? What's wrong?' "
That's unreasonable. But it's understandable.
They expect the impossible now.
