Ching scores for Dynamo
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. » Kamehameha product Brian Ching scored twice and Dwyane DeRosario once to help the Houston Dynamo extend their unbeaten streak to 11 matches with a 3-3 tie against the New England Revolution in the MLS yesterday.
Mitchell wins international race
Jamie Mitchell destroyed the field to win the Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championships on Maui yesterday.
Mitchell, who has earned five straight wins in the Quiksilveredition, won the event by more than 5 minutes with his time of 1 hour, 17 minutes and 26 seconds from Maliko Gulch to Kahului Harbor. Marc Rocheleau finished second in 1:23:04 with Gary Fortune in third at 1:23:24.
David Kalama won the standup race with a time of 1:11:11 over Ekau Kalama. Keoni Watson won the stock race by 28 seconds over Kai Hall in 1:26:22.
Hayashi, Phengsavath lead Pro-Pro
Kevin Hayashi and Joe Phengsavath teamed to shoot 7-under-par 63 to take the first-round lead at the Aloha Section PGA Pro-Pro Championship at the Kaanapali Resort on Maui.
Hayashi and Phengsavath made eight birdies in their round. Kirk Nelson and Brian Sasada are two strokes back entering today's final round. Patrick Clary and Patrick Finigan are another shot behind at 66.
12 golds for Hawaii judokas
Hawaii judokas earned 22 medals, including 12 gold, at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.
Gold medals in Girls juvenile-B went to sisters Chrissy Chow (52kg) and Mindy Chow (53kg). Other golds in girls' competition went to Teshya Alo (intermediate 1, 30kg), Chandler Cassidy (intermediate 2, 38kg), Bree Rapoza (intermediate 2, 48kg) and Nicole Taniguchi (juvenile-A, 40kg).
Katherine Lum earned a bronze in juvenile-A 44kg while Jessica Oda was fifth in intermediate 2 28kg.
Hawaii dominated the boys intermediate 1 30kg division, with Tyler Allen taking gold, Noah Pineda-Abaya fourth and Hikina Gaughen fifth.
Also winning gold in boys competition were brothers Jacob Palimoo (juvenile A, 36kg) and Zorich Palimoo (intermediate 1, 34kg). Other golds went to Ryan Oda (juvenile A, 40kg), Bryson Castro (intermediate 2, 38kg), and Dane Pestano (intermediate 2, 73kg-plus).
Hawaii surfers bounced in South Africa
Andy Irons was the only Hawaii surfer to advance to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa on Saturday. But that's as far as he would get.
After beating Frederick Patacchia in an all-Hawaii third-round heat, Irons lost to Dean Morrison of Australia in the quarterfinals. Pancho Sullivan lost to Mick Fanning in the third round.
Taj Burrow of Australia went on to beat Kelly Slater in the final to move into second place on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour Ratings, just ahead of Irons.
HPU signs Hilo's Ebesu
Hilo graduate Royce Ebesu has signed with the Hawaii Pacific University baseball team.
Ebesu, a left-handed pitcher, was named to the Star-Bulletin's All-State team with a 0.94 ERA while helping the Vikings to the state tournament.
Six medals for Andrieu
Brenda Andrieu of Ewa Beach claimed six medals in the women's 65-69 division at the National Senior Games held June 26 to July 4 in Louisville, Ky.
Andrieu, representing the Hawaii Masters Track Club, won gold in the long jump. She took silver in the hammer throw, pole vault and 4x100 relay, and placed third in the 100 meters. She also placed fifth in the high jump.
