Drama education group receives grants

The Alliance of Drama Education received a $6,000 grant from Friends of Hawaii Charities and $5,000 from the Atherton Foundation to help at-risk teens through a T-shirt Theatre. Teens from Farrington High School and Kalakaua and Dole middle schools would participate in the after-school theater program to address social and career issues.

Le Jardin Academy received $75,000 from the Bank of Hawaii Corp. for its $21 million capital campaign for the construction of 18 classrooms, a gymnasium and road infrastructure on its Kailua campus. The classrooms will be for middle and high school students and a library.

Tyson Suzuki of Honolulu, a senior at Heald Business College, met with members of Congress about tobacco use prevention. He traveled to Capitol Hill as a representative of the Youth Activism Council of the American Legacy Foundation, which is dedicated to preventing teens from smoking or helping them to quit.

Chaminade University of Honolulu was accepted into the Leadership Alliance, a national consortium of 33 institutions of higher learning. The alliance helps underrepresented students develop into outstanding leaders and role models.
