Kaneko moves into fourth place
Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu shot a 1-over 71 yesterday to move into fourth place at 7-over 147 after the second round of the Rolex Girls Junior Championship at the Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo.
Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., tops the leaderboard at 142.
Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident, never recovered from a double-bogey 6 on the first hole and finished with a 4-over 74 that put her in a tie for seventh with three others at 149.
Elyse Okada of Kahului checked in with a 77 and is tied for 21st at 155.
The tournament ends today.
Chang throws 2 TD passes in CFL
Former Hawaii quarterback Tim Chang went 10-for-17 for 239 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 35-23 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last night in a Canadian Football League exhibition game in Winnipeg, Manitoba, according to a Canadian Press story.
"I thought he made a couple of clutch throws and stuck the ball in there, read the coverage well and distributed the ball," coach Charlie Taaffe said, the story read. "He's such a gunslinger. I thought he made a lot of strides tonight."
Ito/Gee scholarships awarded
Former Keaau High golfer Sarah Sheffield earned the Bill Gee/Monte Ito Memorial Scholarship Award for the third straight year last night after the David S. Ishii Foundation benefit tournament at Pearl Country Club.
Sheffield, who was the 2004 valedictorian at Keaau, will be a senior captain for the Gonzaga golf team next season.
Natalie Nakamine of Roosevelt also earned a Gee/Ito scholarship award last night.
The scholarship awards of $1,500 honor the memorable sportswriting careers of Bill Gee and Monte Ito. Gee was a sportswriter and editor for the Star-Bulletin and Ito covered sports for more than 50 years for the Honolulu Advertiser.
Sea Warriors sign 2 JC transfers
Two junior college transfers signed letters of intent to play for the Hawaii Pacific basketball team.
Rod Harmon, a 6-foot-4 1/2 swingman and 5-10 guard Jason McKinney will join the Sea Warriors.
Harmon averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds for Santa Ana College in Southern California.
McKinney played for Los Angeles Southwest College last season.
