12 Girls Band, other stars join PBS fundraising lineup
Musical acts as diverse as China's 12 Girls Band and rocker Bruce Springsteen come to your television this month as part of PBS Hawaii's membership drive.
Former KHON anchor Leslie Wilcox, now the president and CEO of PBS Hawaii, makes her on-air fundraising debut with the 7:30 p.m. Thursday showing of "12 Girls Band: Live from Shanghai!"
The group -- actually, it's a gang of 13 -- performs Western hits and Chinese folk music on traditional instruments. The Girls sold out the Blaisdell Concert Hall in 2005.
More special programming: "My Music: Country Pop Legends," 8 p.m. Saturday; "Great Performances: A Tribute to James Taylor," 10 p.m. Saturday; "Roy Orbison, Black and White Nights," 10 p.m. June 20; and "Bruce Springsteen Live from Dublin," 8 p.m. June 27.
The goal of the membership drive is to raise $150,000 in the month of June to support PBS programming. CDs and DVDs of the featured acts are offered as incentives for making donations. Visit www.pbshawaii.org and click on "Live Membership Drive."
