Volunteers, gifts sought for first foster care camp
Volunteers and donations are needed to bring brothers and sisters separated by foster care together at the first overnight camp to be held July 27 by Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii.
The agency is initiating the "2007 Camp Connection" as a way of providing stability, support, cultural/environmental education, and fun activities for siblings who only see each other once a month, according to a release.
In the foster care system, siblings are often separated and lose touch with each other. Through Project Visitation , the children are reunited each month to maintain stable bonds in a safe environment, the release said.
Volunteer counselors for the camp will be provided training and support throughout the program. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and free of criminal convictions. Contact Volunteer Legal Services before Friday to apply at 528-7050 or e-mail projectvisitation@vish.org.
Sponsorships of $150 for each child are also needed. The amount will include the cost of the activities, food, and camping gear.
