Glanville a candidate for I-AA job

Two positions on the Hawaii football coaching staff could become open next week. Defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville appears to be headed to Portland State, and PSU legend Mouse Davis, also a UH assistant, might be his offensive coordinator.

Glanville is the leading candidate for the head coach job, two sources close to the Division I-AA program said yesterday.

Glanville will go to Oregon tomorrow to interview for the position, which opened when 14-year Vikings head coach Tim Walsh left to become offensive coordinator at Army.

Glanville declined to comment yesterday, other than to say Portland State would be releasing the fact that he is among the candidates, and that he would meet with school officials Monday and Tuesday. (PSU did release that information yesterday.)

UH head coach June Jones declined to comment, other than to say there are "several options" if Glanville leaves, including current UH defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold.

Portland State wants to name a new coach by the end of next week.

Jones and Glanville also declined to address a report that Davis, the former Portland State head coach, might join him as offensive coordinator.

Davis, 74, who has assisted with the UH running backs, offensive line and special teams the past three years, has said he wants to retire. But directing the run-and-shoot again at Portland State, where his teams set records in the 1970s and '80s, might re-energize him.

He could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Arkansas State receivers coach Mike McCarty and Willamette head coach Mark Speckman have been reported as other candidates for the Portland State head coach job.
