Pearl City stays undefeated with rout of Utah
Shayne Nakata allowed just one hit in five innings to lead Pearl City to an 11-1 win over Snow Canyon of Utah in the Junior Little League Western Regional yesterday in Beaverton, Ore.
A.J. Johnson and Kala Neal each drove in two runs to help Pearl City improve to 2-0 in pool play.
Pearl City plays West Valley of Idaho tomorrow.
Hawaii boxers lose at U-19 nationals
A pair of Hawaii boxers participated in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Under-19 National Championships yesterday in Kansas City, Mo. Keola McKee, of Wailuku, lost to Gabino Saenz in a 20-8 decision, and Bruno Escalante, of Waimanalo, was defeated in the second round by Jaime Rodriguez. Both fighters entered the 106-pound division.
David Tangjian, of Kapolei, lost on a walk-over to Enrique Vasquez in a 119-pound preliminary match Wednesday.
The division winners advance to the World Championships in Morocco in September.
Hawaii trio sign with Silverswords
Kristine Mihara (Kamehameha-Hawaii), Chasity Senas (Mililani) and Tiana Vierra (Leilehua) have signed letters of intent to play for Chaminade, Silversword head softball coach Kent Yamaguchi announced yesterday.
The 2006 Star-Bulletin All-State selections will join a Silversword squad that finished 11-32 last year.
» The Ho'onou softball team (Mililani) defeated the Washington Hurricanes 1-0 yesterday in the opening round of the ASA 16A Softball Nationals in Seattle. Makani Duhaylonsod pitched a six-hitter and Glennelle Nitta hit the two-out, game-winning single to score Tori Ikehara from third in the sixth inning.
Ho'onou will face Acers Glenn (Auburn, Wash.) today in the second round.
Water polo championships start today
The men's National Water Polo Championships start today and run through Sunday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Fourteen mainland teams will compete in the tournament, which ends with the championship match on Sunday at 4:10 p.m. Included in the field is 2000 Olympian and Punahou alum Sean Kern, who plays for New York Athletic Club.
