3 anime series win airtime as 3 others depart

Last week held mixed news for fans of anime in America as a pair of broadcast developments were announced.

Hitting the airwaves -- sort of -- are "Hikaru no Go," "MAR" and "Prince of Tennis," all of which are debuting through a new Internet streaming video service. This joint venture of Cartoon Network and Viz, Toonami Jetstream, will also include series currently airing on TV like "Naruto" and "Samurai Jack." The service is expected to go live July 17.

Leaving in the fall season are "Pokemon," "Yu-Gi-Oh" and "Viewtiful Joe," all Kids WB series that were left off the network's new schedule. While "Yu-Gi-Oh" will have aired all its episodes by then, according to Anime News Network, the fate of the other two series' new episodes is unclear ...

Meeting alert

Oahu Anime Explorer's monthly meeting will be held Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at HMC Academy, 555 S. King St. Scheduled for screening are episodes of "Twin Spica," "Honey and Clover," "Capeta," "Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid" and an undisclosed, fresh-out-of-Japan anime.

Random plugging

Time now for a new, occasionally recurring feature in "Cel Shaded," where I talk about something I'm currently reading, watching or buying that has caught my attention.

This time around, it's an online webcomic that debuted last month, "nemu*nemu." This brainchild of the local artist/writer team of Kyubikitsy and KimonoStereo seems to channel the same spirit as Kiyohiko Azuma's four-panel "Azumanga Daioh" comics, with its cute charm and quick gags.
