'The Prodigy' loses in return to UFC

Hilo's B.J Penn lost by split decision to Canada's Georges St. Pierre in the co-main event of last night's UFC 58 event in Las Vegas, Nev.

Two judges scored the bout 29-28 in favor of Pierre while the other was 29-28 in favor of Penn. GSP improved to 12-1 and will likely fight current welterweight champion Matt Hughes in his next fight. Penn dropped to 11-3-1.

Penn dominated the first round, breaking Pierre's nose with an uppercut and opening up a cut under GSP's right eye. But the bloodied Pierre came back with a takedown in the second round and a slam in the third were the highlights of two otherwise very close rounds.

In the main event of the evening, middleweight champion Rich Franklin demolished David Loiseau, retaining his title by unanimous decision.

HPU splits with Grand Canyon

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team blasted Grand Canyon 12-1 after dropping an earlier game to the Antelopes 8-2 yesterday at Hans L'Orange Field.

The Sea Warriors (10-11) used an eight-run second inning to defeat Grand Canyon in the second game. HPU shortstop Grandon Costa went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Olympian Simmons to speak at QB Club

University of Hawaii assistant water polo coach and 2000 Olympian Coralie Simmons is among the guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other guest speakers include runner and author Brian Clarke, and the coaches of the 2006 state swimming and diving championship teams, Kenny Chew of Kamehameha and Jeff Miester of Punahou.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom. The public is invited.
