Nakamoto, Lau post wins for Lindenwood

Erin Nakamoto (Kalani '03) won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.63 and was on the 200- and 400-medley relay teams that took first in 1:53.34 and 4:06.25, respectively, to help the Lindenwood Lions of Saint Charles, Mo., win the Liberal Arts Invitational at Coe College last week.

She also finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:14.73), fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.55) and was on the 400 freestyle relay team that placed fourth in 3:44.02.

» In the men's competition, Jon Lau (Iolani '04) won the 200 fly in 1:55.92 for Lindenwood to set a pool record. He was on the 200-medley relay team that set a meet record in 1:35.78.

Lau also was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 53.40 and ninth in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.60.

» Chris Ricketts (Mid-Pacific '04) earned points for the Lions in six events. He was fourth in the 50 free (22.26), seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.33) and ninth in the 100 breast (1:03.01). Ricketts was on the second-place 200 free relay team (1:27.85), the fourth-place 400 free relay team (3:15.73) and the 800 free relay team that came in fifth in 7:28.14.

» Nick Borreca (Punahou '01) competed in three individual events and was on three relays teams for the Florida Gators last week in the Southeastern Conference swimming and diving championships at Knoxville, Tenn.

He was fifth in the 100-yard free in 44:07 seconds, 10th in the 100 fly (48:80) and 13th in the 50 free (20:25).

Borreca was on the 400 freestyle relay team that placed second. He was also part of two relay teams that finished third, the 200 free and the 200 medley, where he swam the breaststroke leg.

Florida coach Greg Troy plans to limit Borreca to freestyle races -- no butterfly events like in 2005 -- and relays at the NCAA meet at Atlanta next month.

» Ali Wilson, a junior from Punahou participating for Connecticut College, finished third in the 1,650 freestyle last weekend at the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's swimming and diving championships at Bowdoin College.

Her time of 17 minutes, 45.60 seconds earned All-NESCAC honors and is a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA D-III championships.

In the same race, teammate Puni Almony, also a junior from Punahou, finished 16th in 18:47.62

Wilson also was fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:39.47) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:13.29).

Wahinekapu runs the Vikings' show

Sharon Wahinekapu, the senior starting point guard for the Portland State Vikings, is averaging 7.5 points per game.

The Kalaheo graduate is second with 64 assists on a team fighting for a berth in the six-team Big Sky Conference postseason tourney.

The Vikings are tied for fifth place with Eastern Washington with two away and two home regular-season games to go.

Boxers baseball team has local flavor

The Pacific Boxers, with five Hawaii players on the roster, open their baseball season this weekend with five games vs. Hawaii Pacific at Hans L'Orange Field.

The Hawaii players are senior left-hander Chris Loo from Iolani, Mark Saito, a senior second baseman from Honokaa, sophomore outfielder Scott Yasumoto from Pearl City, Ryan Matsumoto, a freshman second baseman from Maryknoll and freshman infielder Shelton Honda from Kamehameha.
