Emirc gets isles into new effort
SORRY about being gone for a minute -- having to move for the second time in less than a year is no fun.
But at least I had a good soundtrack while carrying boxes, thanks to Emirc and his new mixtape, "Welcome to HI State," which I copped at Speedy Lopes' store, Stylus Honolulu.
I'm definitely feeling the heat from Emirc and producer Syze-One on this one, and there's no doubt that it's a made-in-Hawaii effort. Emirc sprinkles his rhymes with references to and jokes about local culture ...
HE'S ALREADY a superstar, but I've got a feeling Jack Johnson will only increase his appeal to a wider audience with the "Curious George" soundtrack, which hits store shelves today. (Read the review on D1.)
Johnson was on Oahu last weekend, and celebrated his son's birthday at a screening of the movie at Dole Cannery on Saturday with the crew from Star 101.9. I'm told he was stoked when station reps announced to the crowded theater that tickets for his Kokua Festival in April had sold out in less than an hour earlier that day ...
IT'S AMAZING how many townies from different walks of life show up at Karaoke Hut in Kapahulu, despite broken dart machines, warped pool tables and high turnover among the staff.
During one recent visit, I ran into Joey Calderone and talked shop with Diamond Head Grill general manager Joey Gottesman. Before that, I spotted DJ Dawn, who broke the news that she's made her exit from the local club scene ...
DON'T SLEEP on "Refresh," the new 21-and-over Saturday party at Brew Moon.
There was a lot of room to move around last weekend, which made it much easier to get more $3 plastic cups of Black Hole Lager. DJ Revise killed with a mix of old and new, going from old-school Eazy E to brand new Ashanti before dropping in a classic Masta Ace cut ...
MY APOLOGIES to Christie Yamane, the fiancée of KITV weekend sports anchor Rob DeMello. Her name was misspelled in this space a few weeks back, which led to a lot of good-natured ribbing from her co-workers at Waipahu Intermediate School. In my defense, I wrote her name in my notebook and showed it to DeMello while we were at the most recent Rumble on the Rock, and he told me it looked OK ...
