Kilt-clad Abercrombie is named isles’ Scot of the Year

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie is the Scot of the Year in Hawaii.

Wearing his new family tartan kilt, Abercrombie won the recognition at the Caledonian Society of Hawaii's annual Robert Burns Supper at the Elks Club.

Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, who is of Scottish ancestry, co-sponsored a resolution that passed the House in 2004 recognizing the achievements and contributions of Scottish Americans to the nation.

Governor eschews PSAs

The governor and lieutenant governor will not appear in any public service announcements in 2006 for state departments or boards, saying it would be unfair to do so in an election year.

"We will not use our position or afforded opportunities for any government-sponsored or nonprofit public service announcements during this year's election cycle," Gov. Linda Lingle said in a news release.

"I strongly believe it is the fair and right thing to do."

The release said the decision "excludes national PSA commitments for the National Governors Association and National Lieutenant Governors Association."
