Yellow Pages customers are warned of phony letter
Hawaiian Telcom is warning that a mainland Internet directory company is soliciting its customers using the official Yellow Pages Association logo.
Hawaiian Telecom said in a news release that some of its customers have mistaken the solicitation for a bill because of a bottom tear-off piece that includes a payment amount.
The solicitation is actually for a bold listing in soUno Directories' "Internet Yellow Pages," despite its use of the official Yellow Pages logo and wording that says it is from Yellow Pages Processing Center in Tulsa, Okla.
If anyone has any questions, they may call a customer service representative at 800-593-8300.
Water main break slows Kalanianaole
A 2-inch water main leak closed a lane of Kalanianaole Highway near the Olomana Golf Course for much of yesterday.
The leak, reported at 8:30 a.m., also shut off water to 13 homes, the Board of Water Supply said. Water was restored about 6:30 p.m.
Crews were forced to contra-flow Kalanianaole Highway north of Flamingo Road while they repaired the leak.
No parking along Ala Wai 2 mornings
The city has banned parking along Ala Wai Boulevard between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Fridays, officials announced yesterday.
"The ban will enable us to get our equipment in to sweep," said city Facility Maintenance Director Laverne Higa. "The continuous presence of vehicles parked along the curb lane prevents us from properly cleaning Ala Wai Boulevard."
Higa said litter has built up in recent months, blowing into storm drains or the Ala Wai Canal.
Signs were posted last week to notify drivers of the new parking restrictions. Cars parked along the Ala Wai during the prohibited times will be cited or towed.
Flu shots offered at military bases
Eligible military beneficiaries are encouraged to get flu shots and pandemic influenza educational material at health events planned by Tripler Army Medical Center's Preventive Medicine and Army Public Health Nursing departments and tri-service clinicians from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the following dates:

Program to address infectious diseases
Dr. Allison Imrie, University of Hawaii assistant professor of public health services and epidemiology, will discuss emerging infectious diseases in the Asia-Pacific region at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, 1004 Kailua Road.
The American Association of University Women, Windward Oahu Branch, sponsor of the free public program, is focusing this year on "The World Beyond Our Shores." Its programs the past three years have concentrated on "Our Own Backyard."

Police plan weekend sobriety checks
Honolulu police will be conducting impaired-driver checkpoints during the Super Bowl weekend from Friday to Monday.
Honolulu police arrested 3,320 impaired drivers between Oct. 1, 2004, and Sept. 30, according to an HPD news release.
Additionally, police departments in all of Hawaii's counties are working with the Department of Transportation in the federal "52/12" sobriety checkpoint program. In that program, police will be conducting one sobriety checkpoint every week from Oct. 14 to Sept. 30 at unannounced times and locations.

Man robs 2 tellers within a few minutes
A man robbed two tellers at the same bank Tuesday within a span of a couple of minutes, police said.
The man walked into Territorial Savings Bank at 1111 McCully St. at 4:03 p.m. wearing a white hat and a stocking over his face, approached a teller and demanded money, police said. As the teller put cash into a plastic bag, the suspect lifted his shirt and showed what appeared to be silver handgun, police said.
After taking money from that teller, the man moved on to a second teller, where he was given more money, police said. He then fled the bank on foot.
The suspect was described as in his 30s and was last seen wearing the white fisherman's hat and a long-sleeve blue shirt.

Instigator of fight suffers head injuries
KAILUA-KONA » A Big Island man was flown Tuesday night to the Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu after suffering head injuries in a fight that he provoked, police said.
The man, whose identity was not immediately determined, walked up to another man in Kailua and provoked the fight, three witnesses told police.
The person being harassed then punched the man and knocked him to the ground, police said.
The motive for the incident is unknown, and police were not sure if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
