Amsterdam takes Elimimian first

Former Hawaii cornerback Abraham Elimimian was selected by the Amsterdam Admirals in the first round of NFL Europe's annual Allocated Player Draft yesterday.

Elimimian, who is property of the Chicago Bears, was taken sixth overall in a first round that included all defensive players. Arizona Cardinals defensive end Tyler King was taken with the first pick by the Rhein Fire.

Former Hawaii quarterback Tim Chang of the Philadelphia Eagles was assigned to the Fire along with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Drew Henson.

NFL Europe training camp begins in Tampa Bay next month.

Berg nominated for USOC award

Punahou graduate Lindsay Berg, a setter for the U.S. national women's volleyball team, has been nominated for the U.S. Olympic Committee's Sportswoman of the Year..

Berg was one of two female players nominated by USA Volleyball for USOC consideration. The other is beach player Misty May-Treanor. Berg helped lead the U.S. to a 26-15 record last season, including medals in its three final events.

Frisselles knocked out of Rolex 24

Burt and Brian Frisselle of Kihei, Maui, led the Rolex 24 more than 3 1/2 hours into the race yesterday, but had to retire due to mechanical problems.

The Rolex 24 is a 24-hour race at Daytona, Fla., between teams of three drivers alternating shifts. The Frisselles are partnered with Patrick Huisman, who relinquished the lead when the car started to overheat. Burt Frisselle climbed the team into the top 10 before it decided to retire 7 hours into the event.

Amemiya speaking at QB Club

Hawaii High School Athletics Association Executive Director Keith Amemiya will headline a full slate of speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Joining Amemiya will be race car driver Bev Tate, Kamehameha volleyball coach Chris Blake and player Kanani Herring.

The program begins at noon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.
