Lane closures to halt during holiday season
Highway repair projects that involve lane closures will not be scheduled between Thursday and Jan. 3 to make way for holiday shopping traffic.
Projects that do not require lane closures, including shoulder and landscaping work, will continue during the period.
Also, emergency road maintenance work could involve some unscheduled lane closures.
Chaminade receives $1 million pledge
John and Mary Lou Brogan have pledged $1 million to help fund an educational center at Chaminade University.
Chaminade's education building was renamed Brogan Hall in a dedication ceremony honoring the Brogans for their generosity and the impact their gift will have on improving the quality of teachers in Hawaii.
John Brogan is a Chaminade regent, chairs the university capital campaign and led the board for two terms as chairman. He is a retired president-Hawaii for the ITT Sheraton Corp.
"The Brogan's generous gift to Chaminade University has enabled the faculty in the Education Division to serve the teachers and administrators in the Pacific Rim and Hawaiian Catholic Schools," said Lynn Simek-Morgan, interim dean of education. Chaminade graduates the second-largest number of teachers in the state.
Maui college program is awarded $387,743
Maui Community College is getting a $387,743 federal Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant for its Ohana project.
The funds will be used to engage native Hawaiian students and their families in distance learning by placing home health-care technology in students' homes.
MCC will also provide electronic study groups, financial aid counseling, learning management systems, mentoring and tutoring.
6 new recruits join Kauai's police force
WAIPOULI, Kauai » Six new Kauai police officers have graduated from the police academy, making a small dent in the vacancies in the Garden Isle's police force.
But despite the additions, the 120-member police force still has at least 20 vacancies.
The six officers -- Philip Banquel, Chito Garduque, Chad Listman, Jason Matsuoka, Kaulana Renaud and Wade Takemoto -- finished their 20-week academy training and are on patrol with a field training officer, Kauai county officials said last week.
They held their graduation recently at a local resort.
The Most Outstanding Recruit award was given to Renaud.

Separate fires destroy car, force evacuations
Big Island police are investigating two fires that appear to have been intentionally set early Monday in Kona.
The first was a vehicle fire and a small brush fire about 200 feet away from it in the Makalawena area. The incident was reported at 2:16 a.m. yesterday off Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the 88-mile marker. The Fire Department extinguished the fires, and the vehicle was destroyed.
Witnesses reported seeing three youths and a blue vehicle in the area of the fires.
At 2:42 a.m. yesterday another fire was reported in the area south of Hualalai Road, between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway.
The fire forced the evacuation of units on the east side of Kamaaina Hale Apartment Complex, but no structures or vehicles were damaged.
Police shut Hualalai Road between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway from about 3 to 6:45 a.m.

Mystery surrounds critically injured man
Police were investigating how a man was critically injured before being dropped off at a hospital early Sunday.
The victim, 29, was brought to an unspecified Honolulu hospital at about 2:30 a.m. in critical condition, according to police.
Police said the people who dropped him off did not give any details about what occurred and left before officers arrived. Police said the victim did not appear to have been robbed or assaulted, and the case is classified as an accidental injury.

Husband arrested after wife's jaw broken
Police arrested a 29-year-old Kahaluu man Sunday after he allegedly broke his wife's jaw.
The suspect and the victim, 27, were arguing when the suspect allegedly punched her.
Police said when the suspect realized his wife was injured, he drove her to the hospital where he told medical staff that he had punched her.
Police were notified and arrested the suspect for investigation of domestic abuse, then later for second-degree assault after a medical exam showed the victim suffered a broken jaw.

Man, 24, is accused of threatening woman
Police arrested a 24-year-old Waianae man yesterday after he allegedly struck his girlfriend repeatedly and threatened her life.
The victim, 18, was at a family party when the suspect came to pick her up at about 2:30 a.m. and accused her of cheating on him, police said.
The man hit his girlfriend 10 times and threatened to kill her while driving to three different locations in Waianae and Kunia, police said. Police later arrested the suspect at his home for investigation of kidnapping, three counts of abuse, and second-degree terroristic threatening.
